In a vacuum, this is a fair deal. A 1st and a 3rd for the second best forward available (after Lindholm) would be good during most trade deadlines. However, Montreal was paid a 1st to take him and then signed him to a reasonable contract and then traded him away for another first and a third. Yeah, they WIN the overall transaction, even though Winnipeg are not the losers here. Calgary is certainly the loser here.
I really like Monahan, I think hes a great player and will fit in nicely in Winnipeg.
At the same time though, the Habs FLEECED the Jets. How do they manage to win every trade involving Monahan? Investing so much in a guy who has battled significant injuries is ridiculously risky

I mean, they were paid to take him because he had an awful contract. Now Monahan is on a more reasonable contract signed as an UFA, so I feel like the firsts are not related.
Treliving’s splashy summer certainly looks awful in hindsight. How was he unemployed for like, a week?
No way he moves Brodie. Too high of a cap hit for anyone to take him. Ik hes been mediocre this yr but he’s still an NHL dman even if he end up playing 3rd pair.
As a Flames fan I'm thrilled for Monahan (and still very annoyed at Brad Treliving paying a first to dump him in 2022). If I was a Jets fan I'd be nervous about trading our premium draft pick for a player has been a ticking time bomb when it comes to major injuries the last handful of seasons. I hope he's able to finish the year and continue playing well, but it feels like a big risk.
Glad the Canucks got out ahead of the C market with Lindholm. Did not want to get caught paying a 1st for a rental middle 6 centre. It's already been said but brilliant asset management by the Canadiens here. That's gotta be their biggest strength.

Montreal could use a warm body on the D Line, all it takes is a 1st round pick haha
It’s an overpay, but that’s what it had to be for Monahan. He was probably the best centre left on the market. So pretty fair, maybe a slight Montreal win.
So the Jets get a cheap costing player to help them for a cup run. Montreal gets weaker meaning no chance of making the playoffs this year AND a weaker Montreal team makes that 2nd round pick of Montreal the Jets own even better. Montreal gets a 1st which will probably be 30th overall in a known weak draft. Seems the Jets win this trade. Finally stop saying Montreal is getting 2 picks…Jets have to win the cup for that 3rd rounder which isn’t even until 2027
its a win/win...win for MTL with the 2 picks but as draft guys are talking about, there is a massive drop after pick 22 for this draft class and we still have MTL 2nd that will be in the high 30's/low 40's...so it should be a drop of 15 spots for a decent 2nd rounder.
win for WPG as Monny solidifies the top 9 as long as he stays healthy like he has done for the last 12 months
The other aspect is that they Jets are overloaded with prospects so who cares about losing a first i a weak draft

Exactly. There are a lot of teams who think they have a real shot at the Cup this year and very few teams tanking, so it is a sellers market.
I thought this would wait until Monday but figured it wouldn't be much longer after the Lindholm domino.
Hughes did not overplay his hand, accepting an early offer to make sure Monahan went somewhere decent, while still getting the expected return.
Honestly did not expect Winnipeg to be the one to step up, but they've only traded one 1st in the last decade and are in a good position, so I see this as Chevy rewarding Scheifele and Hellebuyck for their commitment and the team for buying in.
Wish the best to Monahan and I wouldn't mind seeing the Jets go all the way now.
