I'm at this weird middle-ground of "this is a bad signing" but also "I love them betting on the player." Either way, with the cap expected to make a big jump in 2-3 years, $4.2M isn't going to be as big as it seems down the line.

For your info : the buyout cost for him at 25 years old (in 2025) is 700k for 10 years

Exactly. CBJ tried a similar signing with Wennberg, and it didn't pan out - stays on the book for six years. At least the buy-out is relatively cheap.

Who even is that and why is he getting $4M

He's not getting only 4M, it's a $30M commitment on a guy with 54 NHL games under his belt!

It's not gutsy, it's plain bad management.

Any first rounder defenceman without stats can now ask for +4M AAV after half a season based on this comparable!?!?

Long time I haven't seen a Chayka's special, we'll see how this one turns out.
If he hits his 2LD ceiling the contract isn't even much of a bargain (more like going rate than anything else) so I don't see the upside considering they'll have other dman to spend money on soon.

His 2LD ceiling when he's already been playing top pair LD? It's funny how people in here are so clueless about a player. It's fine to not know about a player, but at least do some research before commenting about it.

Somehow worse than the Andrew Ladd contract...

Yea a 22 year old 6'4 defenceman with great defensive metrics is similar to a 31 year old power forward FA.

Klingberg signed a 7 year extension for 4.25M AAV back in 2015 after only 65 career games.

This is getting Dahlin's top pair partner on a potential steal contract.

Great contract! Y'all who voted no clearly never seen him play or know who he is. 1st pair shutdown D-man, I don't see people calling Pelech's contract a bad one. Samuelsson will probably grow to be just as effective of a defender.

Finished out the season on the top D pairing with Dahlin. Defensive Dman who plays a physical game, has an active stick and was able to seamlessly switch sides depending on what Dahlin was doing. The only Dman on the roster who was able to anticipate Dahlins play in the offensive zone, well worth the investment and it's going to be a bargain in a couple seasons.

So basically you found your Esa Lindell.
Instead of Klingberg your guy has to mop behind Dahlin, trying to minimize the damage he does by being overly offensiveminded.
Its a full-time job grin

Unless Samuelsson also has a rare disease, I think it’s safe to leave Cody Hodgson out of this particular discussion.

Ok how did I not know this? Please elaborate

He ended up retiring because of malignant hyperthermia. It's a genetic disorder they didn't find until his final season with Nashville, but he said it had been affecting him for several seasons.

High risk, high reward, Samuelsson is not worth that yet but he apparently will be playing with Dahlin and he’s a good DFD, he could become another underrated good defensive D in a couple years

I'm a fan of Samuelsson, but this is way too much for wah too long considering the extremely small sample size

First of all, can the folks doing these start adding a not sure/too close to call/don't know type option in these polls? Grazie.

To the topic, this is weird. Yeah, it could end up looking good, but not so good that this isn't a strange gamble. His ceiling is as maybe a defensive minded 4th D man. So yeah, this seems oddly extravagant for a so so skater (and that might be a little generous) with 54 NHL games under his belt.

How is his ceiling a 4th d man when he's been playing top pair? His ceiling is Slavin. He's already a top 4 d man.

And Klingberg had 40pts, including 11 goals, in his 1st season to show for it!!!

Congrats on signing the same contract for a guy without stats.

100% agree and this is a good contract that will seem cheap in years to come. GMKA is managing Cap for the future.
