What a great contract for a number two defensemen. It'll be a steal In 3 to 4 years when the cap goes up. At the end of the contract it should be the average price for a number 4 defense man.
Way too much and way to long for a 28 year old! That's the Columbus tax I suppose....
He got the Lindholm contract when he deserved a Ristolainen type of deal (5x$5.1M).
I don't understand why people call him a 1st pairing defenseman when he's clearly not. Pretty sure he was sheltered on the 3rd pairing in NJ for a while.
Basically a Petry contract. Might not get full value in the last couple of years, but for now it's looking good coming in just under Petry's cap % from 2 years ago and with the cap projected to rebound.
This deal is exactly why I love the Marino deal since day one. Severson is a better defender than most Devils fans give him vredit for but this is not a deal I want on my cap during my core players prime years.
Overpaid for what he’s worth, but compared to the market for Dman. See Sanheim, it’s a completely fair value, and it’s gonna make CBJ a lot better, so good signing.

That's a Weegar contract comparable lol not Petry
Petry and Ehkolm are comparable
AAV and term are good…same as Weegar which was an often used comp. I think Severson’s defense gets highly underrated. But his bread and butter is pulling the puck out of d-zone and getting it into transition. This should immediately help Columbus’s forwards that score off transition…and generally stretch the ice for Blue Jackets.

He was a top pairing D on NJD for many years until this year when he was pushed down the lineup. Basically replaced by Marino.

"He was on the top pair when the team didn't had anyone else" doesn't make him a better player than he is. Being less reliable than Marino tells you everything you need to know about how Severson isn't 1st pairing material.

Severson has always wanted max term…that has been said for about a year and the thinking was that he was willing to give up $$ to get max term (which he did here)
He has never once been in “sheltered role”. For last 5-6 years he has been out team’s leader in ice time. This year, his special teams minutes were cut into by other good dmen, but he was always top-4 in even strength minutes.
Lastly, there really is no valid comparison to Risto. Completely different play styles and Severson is much better in all areas of the ice. Sevo is probably a top-pair dman (meaning top-2 in TOI) on 20+ teams.

You are right about him loosing playtime to better players ...16:16 average TOI in the most recent playoffs. When Marino is clearly better than you defensively, you ain't top 2 material IMO.

So you are saying because Marino played well in playoffs, than means Gudbranson > Severson?
