I don't really see the appeal in Newhook, so I'm not really a fan. Hopefully I'm proven wrong.

Interesting trade... I'd have to say it's an Avs win though.

Future top 6 forward for 2 picks that will likely never become full time NHL players. Clearly makes sense for Montreal.

IMO, a fair deal for Newhook would be Fairbrother + one of the two picks, not both.

This is more than what some teams pay for a Top 6 Forward.

And Newhook needs an extension.

Colorado wins the trade.

Does this mean that COL tries to keep Compher as their 3C?

Avs fans owe @jonh514 an apology whom proposed this many times.

Smells like Lehkonen from last year.

Went Wughes is a mad mad during the draft!!

Overpay imo, but newhook is young so I can very easily be laughed at for this comment in the future lol

Wow, interesting deal.
Was told by Avs fans 2 weeks ago that it would be an overpay to move Newhook+ for Scheifele so kinda feel validated by this one lol. Also good on Kent Hughes for taking another swing at a young player rather than keeping the picks. Draft tails off by pick 31.

Yzerman hoarding picks isn’t really moving the needle and we saw what Jersey had to do with Walsh. Eventually you need to pay for quality. The likelihood that picks 31 and 37 ever become difference makers are slim.

I love how unafraid Hughes is with a pressure filled market. Guy showed his guts passing on Wright in Mtl last year when most fans wanted Shane!

I’m kind of surprised we’re trading for a 5’10 centre given all the reports about the front office wanting to add more size. Whatever the case, we’ll see how it plays out. The front office’s pro scouting has been good thus far.

Makes the draft a bit less interesting from our perspective, though, now we only have one high pick instead of three.

The team that wins biggest out of this trade is Winnipeg, because now Montreal is out of the PLD sweepstakes and the Jets have the leverage.

Huh? How does it help Winnipeg if they no longer have another major team bidding against the Kings?

Not that it matters, since it sounds like the deal is mostly done.

Fairbrother, with his injury history, isn’t really a noteworthy prospect at this point. He’s closer to a throw-in.

I feel like this is a lot for Newhook but I can’t see why Colorado did it. They need cheap forwards

True they will need a few more cheap forwards but this gives them some extra trade capital to potentially acquire someone like Konecny or maybe even Debrincat. They'll have close to 15.6m to spend with only 1 hole in the top 6. Maybe they don't land a big fish but I'd actually be surprised if they keep their first rounders this year. They should be all in trying to win during the MacKinnon era.

Glad he has a plan and is sticking to it. Much rather this than doing nothing and just figure things out as they come like Bergevin did.

I don't think this necessarily rules out Dubois going to Montreal. It does make them look deep at centre, but most of their centers can also play wing. Even if it does, I don't see how having fewer teams bidding for him would help Winnipeg get a better price, though I guess if Montreal is his preferred destination, and they're not interested and everybody knows it, other teams might be willing to make a better offer than they would have if they'd thought he would only sign with Montreal.

“If you want loyalty, buy a dog”

“ you can’t trade for big time centres , you have to draft them!”

Same dude that refused a Subban trade for Draisaitl and a 1st in 2016 according to Kevin Weekes

Fair deal, Habs get a young Center to add to their core and Avs get a late 1st, early 2nd and maybe future depth D

At 22 I suppose Newhook could still get better, but this seems like a lot to give up based on what he’s shown so far. Colorado apparently didn’t think he was good enough to be their 2nd-line center. The fact that he’s unsigned should have lowered his value since Montreal doesn’t know what he’s going to cost them, though at least he’s not arbitration eligible so they have some control.

On the positive side, his age is a good fit for their young core of Suzuki, Caufield, Dach, etc., so maybe he’ll develop with them.

It all depends on Newhook contract and who AVS draft and what they look like in a couple years

Newhook will either fall in 3C position, behind Suzuki and either of Monahan or Dach OR be a top6 winger. That'll release a bit of the load off him and let him focus on progressing under St-Louis. Speeds up the rebuild for Montreal, who'll have a player ready in 2-3 years instead of 5+ with the picks.

I feel like the price is steep but felt the same with with Dach a year ago (Romanov + 2x3rd round picks), but here I am saying how much of a steal it is - mostly under his current contract. This one definitely will need 2-3 years before we can declare a winner.

Not the player I would gone after honestly but if MSL can get him to pop off like Dach last year then we'll be laughing all the way to the bank. If he is what he is then yeah this was a bad trade. I feel the difference between him and Dach trades was we knew Dach just needed to get healthy. What was stopping Newhook exactly? He had ample chances to be a go to guy on a team that could make players look better than they were. I dunno, I think they targeted the wrong guy personally.

Also, unless Newhook was gonna be traded imminently otherwise, I would have only made this trade at the draft once we knew a little more how the draft shaped up first. Unless another trade is going down that makes this make more sense (to me). Which is more than likely but for the time being, slightly disappointed that was cost it took to get him and that he was the guy they wanted to go after.
