Leafs Nation is in Seventh Heaven, and they should be . . . their best player locked up for prime years at a reasonable price. A good deal for both player and team.

I dont hate this the term as much as at first glimpse.

Getting the, most likely best 4 years, at 13.25M is quite ok.
With the nagging wrist injury this also cuts the risk down somewhat.
When he hits ufa at 30, it mights be a whole different situation/player. Deal with it then. If toronto wont win cup in the following 5 years they wont mind letting him go at that point....

Highest paid player in the league when this kicks in. Probably still going to be in the top 5 when this expires. Plays 0 minutes on the penalty kill. Probably means Marner gets traded now. Then let's see how well dude scores. Oh well, I'll follow Marner. Plus 4 years is a joke...just gives him a chance to cash in again...0 thought to trying to work within a cap system in an effort to win.

The year is 2028 and the Coyotes have finally moved into the Comb Over in Mesa. Bettman holds a Matthews Kachina jersey and announces his retirement. His job is done.

Not a bad deal. 5 more years with the extension. He just wants flexibility if TO falls apart.

6 years, even a little higher in AAV, would have been better.
The real L will come on his next contract now.
That's when he'll get $15M x 8 with the back-end dog years.

(At least he won't be worn down prematurely with long playoff runs though! XD)

I don’t mind the term at all, but god that is a lot of money for a guy that went ghost in the playoffs (especially against the Panthers).

Matthews will be 27 when this contract starts ... and 31 when his next contract starts.

Anyone criticizing the Leafs for not locking him up from 31 - 34 is legit hilarious.

John Tavares is currently 32 ... and his contract expires when he's 34.

How long has Tavares been "too old, too slow, and over payed?"

A 4 - 5 year term was always the ideal outcome for Toronto.

I understand this. I just think it's kinda crazy

RIP to any team signing him to a massive 7-8 year deal at 30. Not everyone can age like Bergeron or Pavelski

Matthews playstyle should make it fine even at 30

He does not play with a lot of physicality nor aggression. By the time we potentially see regression will be the final 2 years of his deal that is if any occurs

An 8 year deal at 30 for him will honestly be fine.

I love it. Keep capitalizing on a rising cap, and keep your options open. Still in a position to get a top-of-the-market deal when it expires.

Good move, AM.

I'm guessing there will be a lot of "no's" with this.

Guy is staying, all that matters. Not my money that's being spent.

Not your money, but your time and emotional capital spent.

Perfect.
Decent term - Great AAV.

Leafs haters in shambles.
Voting no is just outing yourselves

Just gonna edit this in so people can understand why this is a great deal.
4 years ago when we were working on the last AM contract, they were talking about 8 years at 13.8 avv (same % as McDavid). Evidence
Instead we went with the 511.634 that turned into 11.640,250, and now another 4 at 13.25.
That averages out to 9 years at 12.35aav instead of the 8 years at 13.8aav.
THIS IS A HUGE WIN

Add his ELC and it's 9,5M for 12 years !!!

He also won a Cup before that deal. That helps with a bit of a hometown discount.

once again leafs players show they are selfish. is he worth this much, sure, especially when it will expire before he ages out of his prime.
but the culture there is so self-centered with all these big contracts, no wonder they cant manage to keep guys like bunting and kerfoot, no room for any depth

Wth? Y'all are already in cap hell and this happens?

And only 4 years?

It doesnt kick in till next season when cap goes up 4-4.5m lul

So this does nothing to their cap situation

Bringing in these two fukc nuts when the core was young didn't help.

At the end of the day if TOR can't win anything by the time AM is 31, it's time to move on anyways.
