Its kind of funny how CGY didnt want to deal with their former GM for Zadorov + Tanev back in NOV but was more than fine taking market value for Zadorov and okay value for Tanev
Dallas and Van just walk away with casual robberies lul
Is this the first time a 3rd team retaining managed to get a 4th rounder? Maybe I'm mis remembering but I thought the going rate was a 5th. Assuming I'm not crazy that's a notable development
Last year's deadline period TOR gave MIN a 4th for Josh Pillar's rights (went unsigned) and the 50% of the rest of the retention which came out to be 3.75m
If NJD goes in buying with cap space they'll go into LTIR anyway.
basically the options were either:
clear cap space to accrue enough space to cover bonus overages
or
use LTIR as much as possible this year.
Using dougie LTIR we still have all the cap space we could ever need for an offseason (Yes, including bringing in BOTH Hanifin and Markstrom unretained without sending back cap if we wanted).
Assuming Bastian and Vanacek come back we will have 11 mill in available cap space with a 21 man roster (so can bring in 2 guys adding up to that)
If bastian and Vanacek move to LTIR we will have 14 mill in cap space with a 21 man roster
Oh right, I forgot Hamilton was on LTIR, thank you for reminding me that. Makes much more sense now.

Detroit got a 4th in Savard Deal
San Jose got a 4th in Foligno Deal
San Jose got a 5th in Janmark Deal
Florida got a 6th + Korshkov in the Domi Deal
Minnesota got a 4th in O'Reilly Deal
Minnesota got a 5th in Orlov Deal

5th can be up to $1.5M but once you get close or go over it can jump to a 4th.
I'm impressed Dallas got Tanev at 25% of his original cap hit without having to give up a first round pick or one of their top prospects. He should fit in nicely on the right side of their defense as they gun for the cup once more.
I guess Calgary must really like Grushnikov as a prospect. I think they could have gotten a higher end asset for Tanev given the demand for defensively sound RHD around the league, but Grushnikov and a second rounder (along with maybe an additional third) is still an OK return considering Tanev was on an expiring contract.
I don't understand why Conroy would make this trade this early. He could've gotten more, but decided to sell low early... makes no sense to me.
NOV had the chance to do a blockbuster with TOR who were down 2 Dman and were desperate but held on to get....Market value for both him and Zadorov both of which could have went for more
I know Brad was the former GM but you got to think CGY would have got a better return than this or Zadorov's
Big difference between a “prospect” when it’s a Russian 2nd rounder in the AHL versus a fourth rounder overseas. Calgary got a valuable thing and good for them. Getting a Russian skater to North America can be a costly or risky endeavor as is.
They weren’t getting a prospect of this quality -and- a 1 round pick for a 34 year old pure rental rhd of Tanevs caliber. They got near max value as they should leading the market. The only way they’d have gotten more is if tanevs pedigree were much higher.
Fantastic for Dallas getting a significant upgrade while keeping their 1st round pick with how well they've drafted. Love this for them. Also smart by New Jersey to use Hamilton's LTIR space to add an extra asset
That's two low 2nd +4th for a 75% retained top 4 Dman.
How dead was the market that Calgary didn't believe they could get more value at TDL?
It isn’t helping this year that Boston, both floridas, Toronto have spent significant futures already, Nyr wanting to hold theirs, etc. There are way fewer seats at the poker table. Hard to demand a 1st and get a bidding war if half the firsts, half the seconds are already gone. Teams selling in the west won’t be getting super inflated futures returns from the East. East sellers are way better off.

Pretty bold to state Toronto could offer more when they have no second rounder for the next 3 drafts.
Great deal for a defenseman who will instantly fit in their system. Great trade by Dallas. They also get young prospect. Devils get a fourth. Not exactly sure what that means for them heading into the deadline. Flames get a 2nd and a prospect. Overall, I think Dallas won this trade. We'll find out truly in the long term. Now it's Hanifin's turn.
