Don't worry, Habs can use his leadership while in rebuild, then put him on LTIR in 2-3 years when we're ready to compete.

Joseph should have signed for much cheaper too. Signing him for close to 3M after an 11 games stint in Ottawa was a mistake.

Chicago traded Dach because he was too old for their rebuild, they're not trading for Zegras.
They're going to draft as many high picks as they can for the next 3-5 years.

Hutson is higher than Zellweger and Korchinsky, Chicago top prospect at D, 7th overall in 2022. It shows a lot about Hutson value.
Hutson would be the main piece in a Zegras trade for sure, but i can't see Hughes trade him because of the Boston connection.
If a trade was to be made for Zegras, it would have been for the 2023 5th overall pick, with the Ducks picking one of Michkov or Leonard. MTL isn't trading Dach or Slafkovsky for Zegras.

If, as rumored, you consider the price to dump Joseph contract is a 1st, then this isn't such a bad haul for Pinto. However, MTL just acquired Newhook, i don't see them trading for Pinto. And i'm sure Ottawa wants to keep him anyway. MTL should be all-in on Zegras.

I was wondering if there's any trade possible for Zegras without a top prospect involved. Would two or three 1st round pick be enough? How high would those 1st have to be?

Zegras
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Xspyrit</b></div><div>1) Ottawa will not spend a 1st round pick to move a good 3rd liner who is overpaid by 500K$ at most lol, particularly since he's one of the best PK forwards in the NHL and Ottawa can easily afford him after the current season.
2) This offer for Zegras is certainly a lowball
- Calgary's 1st is hard to predict but an unknown 1st in 2 years as the MAIN piece? Seriously?
- Ottawa's 1st in 2025 will be late
- 2nd round pick
- Tanner Pearson is a cap dump. Makes MORE than Joseph, is really not as good defensively and on the PK, plus Joseph has actually better scoring rates over the last 3 years
It's actually pretty similar to DeBrincat's return who was older than Zegras and had limited market. Zegras is still "cost controlled" for years while ADB was on his last year before UFA
2024 1st round pick (DET) => 2025 1st round pick (CGY)
Dominik Kubalik < 2025 1st round pick (OTT) + Pearson, Tanner
Donovan Sebrango + 2024 4th round pick (DET) < 2025 2nd round pick (MTL)
The difference is not that big and these packages are both not really good for these players. Try Hutson and Montreal's 1st in 2024 (top-5 protected) as the main pieces
What would you ask for Caufield for example? Or Suzuki?</div></div>
What if it's the only way OTT can clear space to sign Pinto? They'd rather trade him than Joseph?
CGY and OTT 1st could be late if they make playoffs, but could very well be between 10 and 16 too.
Pearson is just a needed cap dump for the trade to work.
Caufield and Suzuki are signed for 8 years. If Anaheim can't extend Zegras, they need to trade him to a team with enough cap space to sign him.
I would do Hutson and MTL 2024 1st top 10 protected for Zegras. I'm not giving Hutson + a 7th overall for Zegras. But Anaheim don't need another D prospect.

Comparing Zegras to other RFA Trades w 4 YRs of Control
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pretzelcoatl</b></div><div>I take issue with the Drouin comp. Although he was the same age as Zegras is now, their production is very different in the two years leading up to the trade.
Drouin 15-16: 39 pt pace
Drouin 16-17: 60 pt pace
Zegras 21-22: 67 pt pace
Zegras 22-23: 66 pt pace
On top of that, Zegras is an extremely marketable fan favorite. It should take more than Slafkovsky and a 2nd to get it done imo.</div></div>
Drouin was stuck playing 3rd line his first two season in Tampa, while Zegras played 1st line. I think value should be close.
And Slafkovsky value is higher than Sergachev was. Not sure MTL should be adding a pick.
I think if a trade was to be made for Zegras, it would have been for MTL 5th overall pick at the 2023 draft.

Offensive Development Model (NHLe)
Some Habs fans think Slafkovsky had a bad season, but i think he played decent as an 18 years old. Happy to see NHLe model shows that too.

I'm surprised Lane Hutson isn't in the "well above average" category.

Personally, i would have picked Gulyayev, but they were really interested in Gauthier at 31 or 37. TB ended up drafting him at 37 with MTL 2nd.
Maybe Hrabal too since they drafted 3 goalies later in the draft.

With Toffoli, Backlund and Lindholm out, they're probably going to make bad trades trying to get NHL players backjust like they did with Tkachuk. They can't go full rebuild and trade them for future because they just signed Huberdeau and Kadri long term.
Just keep the 2025 1st and hope it ends up top 10.

Beck is now very high in MTL prospect pool after his OHL playoffs run. Can't see him in a Hart trade.
PHI is reportedly asking for two 1st for Hart. Maybe FLA 2023 1st and MTL 2023 2nd is enough, but that's alot for a goalie.

No GM would have signed him long term anyway, he's going to prove he can stay healthy this season and sign long term with a contender next summer.
He'll play 3C and have PP time with Suzuki and Caufield on their RW, just like he did last season.
