50Leafs 2023 2024 Season Discussion Part 5 - TDL additions (Go Big or Go Small)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>oneX</b></div><div>Ahhhh...Justin Holl...the apple of our eyes...without being disrespectful to the player or anyone else, he should have been a reason not to explore opportunities to add a top level RD.
I'm not even going to talk about Muzzin as an RD because while he was adequate when used there, he was clearly better on LD.
I don't once remember Dubas exploring any RD options beyond 3rd pair. If you don't explore the option, you don't know what could be possible.</div></div>
Man the Holll hate still lives.
Let it go, he's a wing.
Muzzin I never liked on the right side... on the LD early was okay to me but I never liked the extension we gave him.
Be barley made it halfway thru it too.
I'd take Holl over Bosch easy right now but not over Lily.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NorthernLeafsFan05</b></div><div>To add to this, Roy + Kaliyev and then a Duclair trade would set this roster up very nicely. Roy would be 50% retained by a third team to make the cap work, and the trade packages would largely consist of picks + non-roster players (like Abruzzese, Timmins, maybe but hopefully not Steeves, etc.) with the exception of Robertson
Bertuzzi - Matthews - Nylander
Duclair - Tavares - Marner
Knies - Domi - Kaliyev
Holmberg - Kampf - Jarnkrok
Rielly - Roy
McCabe - Liljegren
Benoit - Brodie
Woll
Samsonov
That is a roster with ample secondary scoring and a pretty stout defensive group. Duclair and Marner would be a dangerous duo</div></div>
I could 100% get in board with Roy and Kaliyev, Duclair I don't see the need.
I made an acgm just for me amd it works.

Would Calgary?
I've been a Liljegren supporter since he's been drafted but I'm just not seeing him take that step. For me, it would depend on how extension talks have gone...but he's not someone that has earned $3m+ to me...maybe worth the risk if that's a long term deal...but I've just been seeing a lot of mental errors recently.
From calgary's end...they obviously get a younger guy that can step right into the lineup with control vs a typical draft pick.
TIme to cut bait or hold the line?</div></div>
I would not for Leafs and it's not close for me

Also...the coach is supposed to maximize the talents and effort levels of the roster, not the other way around.
I thought Keefe should have been fired more than a year ago, nothing has changed because the same problems exist that were pointed out more than a year ago. The issue with firing Keefe right now is the choices for replacement are just not as appealing as when Bruce Cassidy was available for example.
How many games into this season? Keefe hasn't figured out which line he can send out blindly and be comfortable with said line settling things down. His words, not mine.</div></div>
I would have taken a chance a few guys that got hired after Cassidy but your right.. Cassidy should have been target... #1
I'm convinced nothing is changing majorly here as long as Shanahan is in charge.
He will just veto a direction change and not let this organization take the next step.
Leafs should be selling off period, what we have right now is legitimately worse overall and the 1 year deals only spell that Treliving was trying to buy time on how to execute Shannys plan.

I heard great analogy on this.
If you go to the park and are sitting on bench, see a water fountain and decide you want a drink of water but you leave you wallet on the park bench.
Comeback to the park bench only to discover that your wallet is gone.

Losing another 100 point player for nothing is not on Brad's to do list.
Cause if this is the logic why didnt we do the same to Willy?
Why is Marner the outlier lul
We give Nylander 1-1.5m more than we should have, give Matthews 4 years, and so all to let the third guy whose also good walk
Logic be flawed, as if this is the way of thinking why not do it to Willy what made him special. He had himself a season. What if Marner goes on to be on a 130 point pace we gonna let that walk no</div></div>
It's funny for you say flawed logic
considering you want to keep working with flawed logic.

Thoughts? If we are going to trade Robertson, I'd like to try and pry one of the Ducks young defensemen away from them. Timmins seems like he's going to get dealt, doesn't seem like a Treliving guy. Regardless, my point is that the Leafs have got more than enough cap space after the Nylander deal</div></div>
I'd rather say sign Forsling at say 4 million aaover Hanifin and make an upgrade else in the lineup.

Either way I feel its basically sign him or lose him for nothing territory come next season. As I just cant see him waive that NMC to leave his home and team he grew up watching

They give Willy 1-1.5m more than they should have, gave Matthews a 4 year deal, and Marner's where they draw the line going move on.....
Marners the Leafs best PKer and 2-way forward who in a bad year still on pace for 90 points and 30 goals. And last year was in Selke convo with Bergeron (top 3). U keep that
As I mentioned if they were to move either Marner or Willy it was gonna be at the draft last season. Its long passed
Got a feeling 12-12.5m x 8 years be on its way for him. Cause we all know they probs waiting for JT 's money to go then either bring back at a 4-5m deal or find a cheaper replacement. And also Brad learned from his experience with Willy. Guy asks for 12m dont fight it just give
As for defensive upgrades its tricky
Sure we can throw 6m at Pesce, Roy, or Demelo but whats the guarantee they will perform better than what Tanev or Walker could do
Sometimes its the guys people dont look at that end up being the better signing. As in FA almost anything can happen and its basically gambling 99% of the time</div></div>
The bed is now made with Nylander.
Moving on from Marner is to ensure roster balance so the next few years don't go like the last few.
Do you really want to repeat the same mistakes???
Definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over thinking you will get a different result.
I would like some real input on Marner trade, I have doing it my head for 5 months and I'm stuck due with the direction

Also factored based on if Bertuzzi decides to take a bit less but goes with term like RNH did
<img class="for_img" src="https://i.ibb.co/N7zvYcD/idea.jpg" alt="idea.jpg"></div></div>
Defense upgrade in the offseason is a must to me, if that means bye Bertuzzi so be it.
We can run with lesser options in that spot potentially like Kubalik.
Roy would be huge and Forsling.
Moving Marner is the path forward, what, who, and how will be tricky.
