I think Nashville will miss the playoffs, they barely made it in last season with Josi, Duchene, and forsberg producing like superstars. 2 out of those 3 will significantly regress and they didn’t do much to improve the team.

When was the last time a team with a top 5 center and top 10 defenseman missed the playoffs?

Not to mention Johansen and Granlund hitting levels they haven't in years and Jeannot shooting 20% as a rookie. I'm not sold.

That division and conference is far from set, so anything can happen, but I can't be convinced they're anything more than mediocre.

Was doing the math and through all of NHL history only 2 players have done 20% of their teams cap hit with the notable being Jagr and Brad Richards

McDavid signed a deal that was about 16.8% of the teams cap. If we apply that to lets say 86.5mill, Matthews next deal will be around 14.5 -15 mill

As rarely these days to star players get the full 20%. McDavid rn is the highest at 16.8% but who knows MacKinnon might surpass that and be the 3rd guy to take 20%

So in general its very rare a player is paid what they are actually worth as often they will play way above their deal in the majority of cases.

i'd be surprised if any player gets the 20% any time soon. i think you'd have to be in a place where you know the cap is growing at a fast pace.

chara signed for 17.05% of the cap and won a cup on that contract. by the time he won tho the cap had grown quite a bit.

Maybe McDavid on his next deal but yeah you are correct usually on average the most a star player gets is 17% of the teams cap as seen through history

Duchene is certainly inconsistent but Forsberg is that level no question.

With Chicago and Phoenix in their division I don't see what prevents them from making the playoffs. They are better than Winnipeg for sure. Dallas could make a push.

Edmonton, Calgary, and LA seem like top teams in the Pacific. Avs, Wild and either St. Louis or Nashville are the top 3 in Central. If you assume it's St. Louis then that leaves:

2 wildcard spots between Dallas, Nashville, Winnipeg, Seattle, Vancouver, and Vegas.

Of that group I would take Nashville and Vancouver for the 2 wildcards

Dallas + Vegas will get those WC spots IMO. Bruce Cassidy is a great regular season coach , can’t see Vegas missing the playoffs. Dallas has one of the best 1st lines in the league and Heiskanen has the potential to be a top 3 defenseman next season.

All true on Dallas, but if you want to talk about regression then Benn-Seguin-Pavelski can't be ignored. They have a mediocre defense after Heiskanen and are turning over their goaltending to a near rookie (albeit a very very good one); but still its a long season+ to expect Oettinger to be a workhorse. I do respect Dallas and think they will be in the mix but think Nashville is better where it counts and deeper.

Vegas has lost their depth and starting goaltending before the season has even started. I don't see them in any way as hands down better than Nashville as of today.

Ovechkin's 13-year contract had a cap percentage of 18.96%, and WSH did win a cup during this contract.

Actually Ovie was 16.8%. Mcdavid was apparently 16.7% got the percentage wrong by .1% which apparently is a big thing lul

Looked into it we were both right to some degree. As it was 18.96% till a certain point then 16.8% and so on.

That’s the original cap percentage ( 18.96 ) which I’d argue is the only thing that matters when comping contracts, cap percentage at the time of signing is much better than saying x is making 8mil now so y should get 8mil max forgetting that the cap percentages at time of signing are vastly different

See the thing is though, they did upgrade without really losing anything off their active roster. So even if Duchene, Jeannot, and co. regress a little, you’re still injecting a full Nino Niederreiter’s worth of production to help make up for that, plus I think Tomasino is a potential breakout candidate. And McDonagh will help the team defense, so as long as Saros doesn’t fall off a cliff they should be solid in terms of preventing goals. I’m not sold they’re better, but I think they’ll likely be at least as good as they were last year, and with the way the rest of the central is trending that might be enough. I think that’s probably gonna be the weakest division next year.

Has anyone realized how many NTC and NMC the bruins have?
If there was an expansion draft they would be so screwed because they have to protect them. They Could lose Zacha or Carlo. And I'm not sure about Swayman because of the way expansion rules work with young players. But they would have to protect Ullmark.

I’m a Christian but I still respect this from Naz even though I highly disagree with his beliefs. Pretty cool moment.

I was away for a few days the week before last and completely missed Monahan being traded to the Habs. Literally just found out about it.

Being traded for faceoffs is kind of silly. Like yes if your supposed to be a shutdown 2c then there is an argument but thats not what Dach was drafted to be

Would have been funny if Dach came here as man Malhotra has helped our guys FOW% improve even though JT and Matthews were already pretty solid with that
