If I were NJD I wouldn’t give Mercer. He looks to be coming along very well. Ultimately, he is trending to having a larger impact than Timo. He’s also playing more meaningful minutes than Meier did at the same age while the team is winning. He also gives much more cap flexibility to the Devils in the medium term, allowing them to consider other areas for improvement. I almost wonder how real the rumor is, as it should be a full stop no.

This situation is San Jose’s fault for structuring Meier’s contract the way they did. They shouldn’t be handed a re-do at somebody else’s expense. Same reason Tkachuk isn’t a flame.

Random thoughts:

1. The NHL should set a cap for Canadian teams independent from US teams due to exchange rates and taxation.

Hockey is better when Canada is better at hockey.

Every owner would make more money if Canada was better at hockey.

Will never happen because the Canadian owners are outnumbered.

2. I wonder how much opprotunity cost matters.

Purely Hypothetical to explain:

Boston wants Barbashev. Blues want something good in return.

Why wouldn’t the Blues say give us this or will trade him to your first round opponent?

Or another hypothetical example:

Blues trade to Toronto - ROR etc. Dubas should have said, like Vegas did during the expansion draft, that we will only do this deal if you agree that you will not deal with Tampa Bay And Boston.

The cost at the trade deadline is not just the player on your team, it’s the player on the oppositions team as well.

I wonder how often this happens, and how much it costs.

3. I hope this is the end of the contract structure that pushes qualifying offers to the stars. It’s such a bad structure from a hockey, fan, and franchise perspective. It borderline guarantees a player is leaving - giving players under 27 basically a NTC by design at the age of 26. No team would give up assets for these players without a negotiated extension.

If I were a gm the number of contracts I’d write that ended at the age of 26, with a super high final year, would be exactly 0.

Elc —> bridge —-> 8 years or trade is the only path I’d take. You control ages 20-31 with cost certainty.

I understand that. They thought they were getting Petry who was better now and Smith who they thought would be better down the road. Instead they got someone worse now and someone who looks like their development has stagnated. Unfortunate

Devils fans never missed Ty Smith. We knew what he was. Unforced errors by the Pens.

For the price to extend Meier, the. Devils could probably sign a $5M AAV forward and keep Mercer. Sharks are asking for a loaf of bread. In the end, they'll get a couple slices.

We can do that better, tax adjusted cap ( depends on which province/state the team is in so that that way it's 100% equal, Canada and US do not have equal tax rates everywhere )

Damn that sucks for Muzzin. Leafs get LTIR room and likely to upgrade their defense now.

Yea to me rn the upgrade should be shutdown RD to play with Gio

As last year Toronto's shutdown was Muzzin-Brodie.

This year its Giordano-Holl

Despite being 39 Gio's been playing like hes 28 defensively. Holl is like a coin toss u never know what your getting with him on a game by game basis

As I see it now

Rielly-Brodie
Gio-?

Is this a positive development for the Leafs? In other words, is the LTIR space more valuable than Muzzin?

Trust me I would take a healthy Muzzin over cap space all day every day that guy was a monster on our Blue Line and combine that with this current team and man we would be set.

I mean not really. They now have to go and trade future assets to get a replacement for Muzzin and that still isn't really good enough for their defense.

So we have some names of teams supposedly calling about Krug... the problem is I think he will only waive for 1-2 of these. Maaaaybe three if he can be talked down to Florida.

HE'S FINALLY HERE

I think I'm gonna have to watch the game tomorrow against St. Louis (that is, if he actually plays)

I really thought he'd be a solid bottom six NHL'er. His AHL offensive numbers are good. I know he struggled defensively when he was a Devil. Too bad for him. I hope he gets claimed and finds his way.

He was good but once we got Acciari and ROR kind of suspected he was going back to the AHL.

Nice depth to have though and will be important for our Marlies. If hes still with us next season I could see him fight for a 4th line spot as of all call ups he looked the best

5 Overpaid players. If they really want to retool on the fly, they need to figure that **** out.
