Awesome for Washington, getting a younger player to play a Chychrun role for less than Chychrun.

If he continues to play well, Gus will be a great defensive pickup for Toronto.

Fair deal, Toronto gets a 1st back ( could be flipped, who knows ) and a 3rd pair D who’s done good this year for Sandin who’s expendable with Rielly and McCabe on the Left side already

Seems fairish for now.
Question is how / if Dubas uses the extra 600k in cap space and flips that 1st in some other cocaine fueled trade.

Good trade for both sides. Good value for the caps and after getting McCabe there was no room for Sandin

I'll miss you Sandin, take care of him Washington...

Curious if Dubas will keep the 1st rounder or deal it at the deadline for something else?

Toronto has some extra incentive to beat Boston now as their pick will be better if they prevent them from getting to the final 4

Huge L by Dubas in this trade. One thing I will say though was that Sandin was probably getting moved regardless in the offseason now that McCabe is on this team

This is a terrible trade by the Leafs. Sandin has so much upside. I cannot understand why Keefe seemed to so strongly dislike him.

And for those curious:
McCabe this year 122 hits
Sandin 113 hits

He obviously isn't McCabe's physicality (or close), but he isn't a soft player. He is a smooth skating defenseman who dominated third pairing minutes, with good offensive upside. Its not even Washington's first, its Boston's first, which is going to be at best like 28th or something.

Dubas has lost his mind.

Reminds me of Fletch making so many trades to keep that 93-94 team going strong, but ends up losing in the 1st Rd and missing the playoffs with no Draft picks or prospects for a quick rebuild.

At this point I think if the Leafs line up against the Sabres or Wings or Sens they'll still lose in the first Rd with all this insane roster turn over.

Dubas is playing EA Sports video game but in real life.

Sad to see Sandin go. He has the brains to be a top 4d and I wouldn't doubt he becomes one. His size and skating are limitng factors, he's not tiny and hes not the slowest guy on the ice but it limits him from taking away time and space.

I would've like to see him step into Reilly's role but with him locked up plus Mccabe on the left side for 2 more years Tor isn't a good spot for him to develop. Better to trade him now than have his value lower playing a 3rd pair role for another year.

Good deal for both side imo

Initial reaction is I don't like it.

But if Dubas flips that first ++ and brings Chychrun in I'll kiss his feet.

Head scratcher at the moment though.

Toronto - Gets a PP merchant but a terrible 5 on 5 defender if he's CHI/WSH quality Gus. Depth D if he's not. Either way, he's a downgrade on Sandin. 1st round pick is nice, but likely to be at the end of the draft.

Washington- Gets a very good top 4 defender that's only 22 and poised to become a top pairing defender. Has control and they're selling very high on Gus. 1st round pick is quality, but not when you're getting someone like Sandin.

Think this is an easy win for Washington

It’s to make some space to active his oft injured over paid back up goalie. And apparently acquire Luke schenn

I kinda like it for both teams. WSH gets a solid young D for their roster, TOR capitalizes on the value of a young D that was a bit sheltered in their lineup.

Probably a win-win.
