To me this seems like a little below the going rate for true 1Cs around the league when signing UFA contracts.

Good for Carolina to get it done and avoid the drama that’ll come with Petterson/Matthews etc. under market value and will really screw up Nylanders ask etc

The offer sheet from Montreal ironically helped Carolina in the long run. The Hurricanes were refusing to budge from an 8 year deal when Montreal signed Ago at 5. Had Aho signed for 8, he would not have been that much cheaper than what he got at 5, but his contract would have expired 3 years later. 3 years from now, with the cap projected to increase, Aho might be a 12-14 million dollar player. Who knows.

Massive signing, and this is one I've been waiting for months to see and I couldn't be any more f***ing happy man lmao. For months this contract has been rumored at 8x9.5, and I couldn't' care less in honesty that he got 250k more at 9.75 mil. Aho is such a great leader (and should be our captain sooner or later), and is one of the best two-way first line centers in the league, and always shows up in the playoffs. Amazing signing for us, and so happy to have Aho back for 9 more years.

hard to not like this signing. Aho is pretty consistent and is not always surrounded by the best offensive players too. Locking up a top 15-10 center for 8 years around 10mil? This deal is as fair as they come.

Aho is only 34 when this contract expires. Canes will get Aho's all prime years under 10m, and they don't have to pay it for too long. Massive win for Canes.
