He carried the leafs in game 4 vs TBL

That's one game. How often has he been the best player on the ice during the playoffs?

The money is actually reasonable, imo. The big wtf is the term. If you asked me, it makes no sense for the player or the team. They don't lock him up for term, and while he gets another shot at a massive 7 or 8 year deal at 30, that always carries risk of an injury derailing his career. Weird deal.

Haven't read the comment section yet, but I'm sure it's totally calm and not chaotic at all.

AAV's more than fair. 8 years would've been in the best interest of the Leafs but I kind of expected shorter. He's sticking around in Toronto at a reasonable price, that's what matters for the Leafs.

No, the term is clearly bad, 4 years is such an awkward term to give someone like Matthews

Eh I think ppl make too much of a deal about it tbh, he’s locked up 4 years that’s what matters rn

Let’s face it we all knew there was a 99.9% Matthews wasn’t leaving

My only question is why couldn’t they make it any longer? Did he want to hit free agency again sooner so he can get even more money later when he’s still elite?

Most star players sign for 8 years

But remember there are exceptions

2 of the greatest SJS players never signed 8 year deals

Look at every contract Thorton and Marleau signed after their ELC's

Where the 8 year deals

People are to used to the 8 year deals but since even before Matthews signed this one or the previous one every report that came was he does not like 8 year deals

Either way as long as he is a leaf who cares. This is how you both try to win and maximize your earnings.

I mean both played for us and Marleau was around when both Marner and Matthews needed their extensions and was like a father figure to both

He could have said you know you dont need to do 8 year deals

Probably just to secure a deal in the future that goes into his older years

voted yes, simply because it could be a lot worse.

Yeah, i was going to say there should be third option for "Fair" or "Okay". This isn't a good contract by any means but it needed to happen. It's the Karlsson-trade of player signings

Its a question as old as time

As funny enough even before he signed his 11.64m deal reports were coming out he wanted a 4-5 year deal as he did not like 8 year deals. Nothing wrong with that as look at Thorton and Marleau

Either way to me he can sign all the 4-5 year deals he wants as long as he stays

And its actually pretty smart for him as he will be 30 at the end of it and this is where I feel we will see an 8 year deal

Matthews has been pretty adament about wanting the mid term deals to maximize his earnings, and a player as good as him gets to determine what he wants

RIP to any team signing him to a massive 7-8 year deal at 30. Not everyone can age like Bergeron or Pavelski

If he stays they'll absolutely be paying for the decline. Fully expect him to get 15 x 8 when he's 29 and his wrist is busted.

Avs fans have got to be really pleased with the MacKinnon contract after seeing this. Half the term, more money for an arguably worse player.

Matthews will be 27 when this contract starts ... and 31 when his next contract starts.

Anyone criticizing the Leafs for not locking him up from 31 - 34 is legit hilarious.

John Tavares is currently 32 ... and his contract expires when he's 34.

How long has Tavares been "too old, too slow, and over payed?"

A 4 - 5 year term was always the ideal outcome for Toronto.
