Pays him middle 6 pay until he's 33. Seems like a low risk, high reward contract. Tippett gets the term, while Philly gets a fairly cheap Top 6 winger. Great deal.

This for one season of first line production seems like too much

But I mean, this is kind of where the market lies at this stage of the league

You mean the cap. Most teams will still only have cap space due to LTIR.

I like it for the Flyers. Tippett has been missed in the lineup the last four games and has showed signs of being a game changer on the ice. Fairly reasonable cap hit for someone who works hard on the ice and can score goals. Fits the culture and what they are trying to build in Philadelphia. Great pickup by the Chuck Fletcher team, great sign by the Daniel Briere team.

This seems like a good deal, Tippett has had solid production and with the cap slated to rise, this should age well

I’m not sure Hawks fans are in a position to claim “overpay” on anyone given our recent history. 🤣

It would have been an overpayment last season, but not by a huge margin. $5 million would have been about right.

However, his defence has improved A LOT going from an on-ice goal differential of 20 below expected to about 6 or 7 below expected for the same games played.

If he continues to improve, then this will be an absolutely bargain in a few years and even at the end, when he's likely playing worse, it will still be really good.

We’re just trying to reach the cap floor right now, + plus freeing up as much cap space as possible for when we need to extend Bedard in 2026

for 6.2 million i guess you want him to improve up to the 60-70 point range, right?

A bit premature but locking up a high upside 24y till he’s 32 to basically a 6m cap hit - has more of a chance to be a good deal than bad.

I think this is a great signing. Tippett is really starting to come into his own now that he is getting over 15 mins per night. If he get's top line deployment he could outperform this contract very quickly.

Dude has averaged over 3 shots per game in his time in Philly; that alone should be enough to get you 30 - 35 goals based off of his shooting percentage. That leaves a ton of upside for the Flyers.

Great signing by Briere.

The deal has risk, but without that you weren't getting this level of upside.

Tippett is 24, so the 8 year term is a benefit in a rising cap environment, not a negative. At $6.2M you don't need Tippett to be a superstar for this deal to be solid, you just need him to be an adequate top 6 winger. Even if he only tops out at what he's shown this year, the deal likely ages well simply with a rising cap, and if he has the ability to take a step, there is a good chance for substantial surplus value.

In terms of team fit, Philly is in the phase where taking a few of these types of risks to lock in some certainty is a good strategy, so all around I like this deal for Philly. I mean there is risk, but that is how you get value, taking measured risks where the upside is just simply bigger than the downside. If you are good at evaluating those, you will gain more value than you lose by a significant margin, and this looks like a smart bet.

Then you sign new guys to 1 year deals and trade them at the TD. Keep recycling until you don't have too. Instead KD signs overpaid depth players to multi-year deals and it achieves nothing.
