Took his QO (but as a one-way contract) to help the team's cap situation this year. Will probably remind the Pens this next summer when he needs another contract.
I voted "no" because Marcus is worth a TON more than this. This might also turn out badly for Pittsburgh because Pettersson may decide he wants a lot more next year, even as an RFA. This signing strikes me as "penny wise, pound foolish" from Rutherford's point of view.
Another Labanc-esque deal where you have to think there is some sort of handshake agreement on another contract already discussed. Nice for the Pens this year paying <900k for a second pairing defender.
Underpaid by about 2.5 million.
Much less shocked at this than the Labanc one though. Team couldn't afford to give him more and being close to camp made it tough to make any big cost-cutting moves.
Why do people think that he is wort a ton? Anaheim ejected him and he played 20-30 solid games for the Pens... NOTHING there says high $ or long term. It says 1 year prove it deal for low $. That is what it ended up being.

Anaheim didn't "eject" him. The Ducks had Larsson, Mahura and then Guhle in addition to Pettersson and chose to trade one of them for what they hope is a scoring forward. The Ducks would take him back in a heartbeat.
Absolutely LOVE this deal and YES there is a handshake agreement with Him and J.R. on what he will get paid in the future. Marcus is super smart to go this direction because he has everything in front of him and behind him to succeed and to earn a second pairing job for the future. If he produces then Pittsburgh will sign him longterm and that's what he wants and if he doesn't they will give him a shorter term deal at a price they have already discussed. No different than San Jose and their drastically underpaid signing this year. BUT players like Marcus are smart and are confident in their game and their work ethic. I like these kind of players! Huge win for both sides and the Pens front office has gained tons of respect for Pettersson in this dealing.
I don't see the dollar amounts most people on here trying to give him. I had him in the 1.4-1.6 range on a 2 year deal.
He signed a prove it deal. I don't think it's much more than that. No hand shake agreement etc.. There isn't much history here for a player.
If he plays well this year he ends up with a long term deal. They just want more of a sample size to go off of before they sign that 8 year deal.
What's his fair market value on a one year deal? $2M? More?
EW Contract Projections: 2019: 1.4 mill $ @ 1 year
1.6 mill $ @ 2 years
3.3 mill $ @ 5-7 years
He is not underpaid by 2.5 million, like someone said here. Exactly underpaid by 500k.
Good deal for the , but not even close to "steal of the year", like the Labanc deal:
82G - 56 Points - 1 mill $ contract for only 1 year...
That guy deserved more $ and years, and he played in playoffs a lot too, with a respectable performance( vs tough opponents - 0.5 ppg)...
I thought he'd get AT LEAST 2 million. They're still over the cap, though. Maybe they'll go with a 22 man roster.
not over 2million unless it was like a 3year deal. This is fair for a one year deal. Not sure exactly how they will handle the cap but 22 might be an option after they eject a couple AHL guys.

he should be third pairing but the penguins only have three proven good defenseman, so could start the season as either second or third pairing.
