San Jose desperately needs scorers. If he can score at a top nine rate still, which I think he can, it's a huge boost for them. They've started 0-4, and while I know it's early, points only get harder to earn the deeper we get into the season.
Doug Wilson in the offseason. "He doesn't fit our current plans." Doug Wilson now with the Sharks competing for the 1st overall pick. "SAVE US MARLEAU!"

If he nets 15g 15a and plays on the P.K. too take that responsibility away from Kane and Hertl then I’ll be pleased. Allegedly he still has his skating, according to Thornton.
It's very hard to see Marleau, at this point in his career, being any kind of difference maker at all. Even 15G won't move the needle much. The EK contract will prove disastrous and the window is about to be slammed shut on the Sharks Cup aspirations.
Was Marleau holding out for more money? $700k is pretty low considering he'd be playing for over $6M if the Leafs/Canes hadn't bought him out. You'd have to think he was asking for Thornton money, right?

I'm 500% certain he was not waiting by the phone. He's a known factor/veteran presence to any team and obviously qualified for 35+ veteran contract terms. His buyout became his golden parachute (read: nest egg contribution) and now he's just getting league veteran minimum.

Right, but why didn't he sign 2 weeks ago? I realize the Sharks are right up against the cap, so was he looking to play somewhere else for the right price?
Nice that they were able to give him a farewell tour in San Jose. For league minimum he will be a good bottom six guy that can help bring their young players up to speed on what it takes to be a pro and have a long career in the league.

Because Doug wanted to go in a different, younger, direction and wasn't interested in bringing Marleau back, until this terrible 0-4-0 start while being outscored 5-17. Pure desperation by the Sharks and Marleau really wanted to play at SJ again
