Marner To Seattle

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 11, 2020
Published: May 11, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I saw this suggestion on Reddit so I’m just going to put this out there for discussion.

Honestly, Marner has not played like himself at all this season & it’s been really frustrating to watch him. I don’t think anyone questions his ability as his work ethic seems highly controversial. He just doesn’t seem to be skating hard, winning battles & getting involved in the play. Perhaps he re-aggravated his ankle sprain & is deadline with a wrist injury, but the magic has been gone from him.

The rumour was that the Leafs front office & coaching staff is sick of Marner’s antics but there are not any teams that want to acquire him. So if they want to get rid of him, they have to hope there is a CBO or they expose him to Seattle.

I think the blame has to be on Marner & his camp for wanting as much money as they did.

It has been speculated that teams aren’t willing to give up assets for him.

Giving 11 mil to Marner after just 1 elite season when the vast majority of first liner wingers made a few mil less was a dumb idea. Not trying to move Marner

And rightly so. TOR would need to retain at least 1,5 mil. Maybe 2 mil even

67 pts in 59 games is not himself? Last season he had, what, 92 pts? This year if he played 82 games he would've had 93.

I don't understand all this love for Weegar. And if he's that good, why does Florida trade him. It's kind of a unpractical scenario to have a player sign a "show me contract" which brings him so close to UFA.
Marner to Seattle. Actually I don't mind it...with the following conditions. First try to trade him in needed for a "fair return" including futures. I see the purpose of leaving him exposed and he's claimed because then the Leafs would have close to 11m to spend elsewhere. Assuming they can spend 11m better than Marner.

Are they contenders? It's hoping that some players are unexpected better than what should be expected. I think it's time to move on from Andersen.
You have a cap of 88m. I think salaries will be based on that. Then every player takes a 33% pay cut because the "actual" cap based on revenues will be 60m in 21/22

lol agreed. Love Marner the player, hate his contact. Waited so ****in long for the Leafs to have players like Nylander, Matthews, and Marner, on the Leafs, I would hate to see one of them traded. I'd rather Dubas find value contracts than trade one of these guys.

His comparables all got 7 million x 3 years - Leafs have essentially overpaid Marner x 3 million in those first 3 years as the cap was slated to rise significantly (around 90 million) when his comparables are all up for resigning - theoretically Marner would be at the 11 mark for an additional 3 years while his comparables that took bridge deals would be commanding around the 12/13 mark as they'd be negotiating a percentage of cap and with cap hitting the high mark it was projected at the time would be priced higher than Marners current deal. That is thought process with Marner signing - Dubas certainly had a 3 year option at around the 7/8 mark but would have just pushed the cap issue down the road

I think you have to understand that no GM may not want to take on ALL of Marner's contract. Assuming either Toronto eats some of it OR they take back some cap there will be a lineup of team willing to take Marner on.

So this idea that no team is willing to take him on simply doesn't make sense. Two teams actively traded for Dion Phaneuf........... After he stopped being good................... I think teams can work out a way to take on Marner.

That's all assuming Leafs front office even want to trade Marner which I don't think they do, unless a fair value trade is offered in which they have to explore it.

If I were Montreal I would gladly take Marner off your hands for free, right now.

That is how good Marner actually is haha. Most Leafs fans would agree that he has another gear.

People get thrown off by the contract, but at the end of the day he makes any team significantly better
