I like this for both sides. New Jersey gets a pick for a player They weren't going to resign and Columbus gets a top pairing defense for cheap.

Columbus both got a player for very little (3rd round pick) and also too much ($50 million over 8 years).

I guess that's a fair deal.

On a side note, if I were the Devils, I would have asked for players back. The Devils have WAY too much cap space and not enough players. The FA market is bad this year, so they better hope some of their AHL players are ready to make the leap to the NHL, or they are in trouble.

I like it for NJ. Decent pick for a guy they can't sign anyway. Nice windfall.

I'm curious as to what the Jackets do with their sudden glut of defensemen, but I guess that's usually an easy problem to solve. Can't say I love the term, but it certainly helps them in the immediate term, so okay for them too I suppose.

Jarmo is fun for us trade nerds, so if there's a clear winner it's us!

For a 3rd round pick and an 8 year deal, this isn't bad value at all for the Blue Jackets. Looks like Mateychuk and Svozil will be relegated to the 3rd pair for the foreseeable future though

Foote, Clarke, Holtz, Nemec, and Walsh could all make the jump this year. (Not all at once but at least some of them will)

No way. The left side is already pretty set with Siegenthaler, Hughes, and Bahl.

I don't think Jiricek will make the team next year
No rush for him, let him and Mateychuk develop

Werenski-Severson
Provorov-Boqvist
Bean-Peeke

Multiple teams were willing to pay the Devils for Severson's UFA signing rights.

Given that Severson is a Top 4 defenceman, it's a reasonable trade for both sides.

Fair deal.

Eh, fair-ish deal.

NJ gets an asset for a guy they were going to let walk. Hard to say anything bad about that.

CBJ get a low top-pair guy who will likely be a good mid-pair D once Jiricek arrives. All at the cost of the Weegar contract.

Boqvist/Peeke trade incoming. Gudbranson buy-out?

The term is the obvious issue, but the cap hit…actually ain’t half bad. Particularly once we consider how the cap is expecting huge jumps in the next few years.

He can play top-pair with Z and/or give Jiricek some shelter as he develops.

Even then, this reeks of “I need to get good immediately and I’m probably not here for the end of this contract anyway” type move from Jarmo.

The contract is overwhelming and trade is underwhelming to me.

Given the C situation in Columbus, I'm still scratching my head.

The 3rd round pick was to facilitate the 8th year.

Columbus could have waited until free agency, but then they could only sign him to a 7 year deal. 8 years keeps the cap hit down.

I don't like the contract, but I am also bullish on the salary cap. Teams also have flows to their builds and when they compete. It's likely that Columbus will have to rebuild sometime in the next 8 seasons. So if Severson is bad or LTIRetired for the back portion of the contract, it's unlikely to matter as much. 2-3 years from now, we'll see similar defensemen get 8 million. The cap stagnating has given teams an opportunity to cost control willing players at cap hits that will deflate once escrow is paid off, it just comes off to choosing the right players...

Graves is going to get close to Gavrikov type of money. NJ would be priced out.

So what’s the purpose of a sign and trade? If they had simply traded player’s rights for a 3rd wouldn’t CBJ be allowed to sign him 8 years since they have his rights?

I'm pretty sure the team has to have the player's rights at the most recent TDL to be able to sign him to an 8-year deal.

Not in trouble.

Foote, Holtz and maybe Walsh come up from AHL. Haula returns as UFA. RFAs are brought back. And we probably make one UFA move or trade on top of that.

Ownership must have let Jarmo hear the branch creak. These have been good moves IMO, but they are not patient moves, they are win now moves.

I wonder if he moves 3OA?
