Is this the first time a 3rd team retaining managed to get a 4th rounder? Maybe I'm mis remembering but I thought the going rate was a 5th. Assuming I'm not crazy that's a notable development

Great add for DAL, excellent price to pay for a top 4 RHD (even if he is just a rental)

I really like it for both sides, Dallas adds a guy who has a few seasons of good hockey left in him and Calgary gets a pretty solid RHD prospect and picks. I dont think this is as lopsided as people think it is, good on Calgary

Wow what an insane trade for Dallas. Defensive RD's like Tanev are so important on cup winning teams. And to get him with 75% retention too? If Oettinger gets hot, watch out...

As for CGY, if it's for such a bad return, why not keep him for the playoffs race? I mean it's not all bad tho, Artem Grushnikov could turn into something decent.

Why are NJ retaining? They're just wasting a retention spot + cap space for a potential move.

Double retention makes this trade a no brainer. I hope that Grush pans out for Calgary. Sad to see him go.

Calgary were never getting a 1st but I dunno, maybe they could have pushed harder for a better prospect than Grushnikov (whose ceiling is as a #6 D it seems). But I get the thinking of replacing Tanev with a defensive defenceman prospect

Calgary's asking price on Tanev was a 1st round pick.

Dallas and pretty much every other interested team offered a 2nd + a prospect.

Calgary caved.

Dallas wins the trade.

And a smaller win goes out to New Jersey for turning a 5th round pick from 5 years ago into a 4th round pick.

David Savard was traded for a 1st + 3rd and Tampa gave DET a 4th round pick

No a 4th is the going rate (see Ryan O'Reilly to TOR and David Savard to TBL trades). ARZ got a 3rd for retaining 50% on Kane

It’s almost always a 4th recently for $1-2mil

Pretty fair to me. I thought a team was gonna pony up a 1st for him but this seems like what he should go for.

If NJD goes in buying with cap space they'll go into LTIR anyway.
basically the options were either:
clear cap space to accrue enough space to cover bonus overages

or

use LTIR as much as possible this year.

Using dougie LTIR we still have all the cap space we could ever need for an offseason (Yes, including bringing in BOTH Hanifin and Markstrom unretained without sending back cap if we wanted).

Assuming Bastian and Vanacek come back we will have 11 mill in available cap space with a 21 man roster (so can bring in 2 guys adding up to that)

If bastian and Vanacek move to LTIR we will have 14 mill in cap space with a 21 man roster

Yep you're all correct. My memory is apparently ****tier than I thought. Maybe I'm mixing it up with the price for a UFA negotiating rights

Fair deal, Tanev’s a 2nd pair D and he will help Dallas cup hopes, while Calgary gets a 2nd and a decent prospect in Grushnikov (who I like), NJD also does well, they use cap space to retain and get an asset

Dallas got a solid defensive defenseman with huge salary retention and only gave up some low value picks and a low value prospect. Unreal, the kind of trade you envy and wish your team did.
