Great trade for both sides. Vancouver gets a solid second-pairing defensemen with good AAV and term and Vegas gets to clear cap space for Pietrangelo. Fair value all around.
People can say Vancouver "fleeced" Vegas but at the end of the day Vegas got Pietrangelo and had to adjust to the market.
Benning better have a cap wizard who can figure this out. This move makes it way harder to sign Hughes, Pettersson, and Demko when they become RFAs next year
Lmfao I remember when the capfriendly hardos were saying “you won’t get a top 4 dman for scraps” lol common sense / understanding salary cap > general knowledge on this site 😂

That's why he didn't sign any of the other guys (Toffoli, Tanev, Stetcher)

It was a fleecing bc Vegas has terrible roster management
Smart move for Vancouver because they are basically replacing Jordie Benn and his time on the ice with a much better player who scores more and can play bigger and more effective minutes. Jordie Benn now becomes a trade piece for someone at the Trade Deadline and or who wants a rental type player. Don't see Jordie ever getting over league minimum again in his career and this just started the process. As for getting a 3rd round pick back to Vegas it's actually very good considering the Cap situation they are in. A win for both sides.

I want to see this magic. Should be interesting for sure.
Vegas going the "use brute force to get through" route!
Low key very good signing. I very much dislike us paying the amounts we are to our forwards right now.
The cap hit is great but AP will be 31 when the season starts and 38 when this deal ends. It’s a terrible deal overall but great for the next 3-4 years but anytime you need to move a really good player to afford a different player makes me question roster management. Normal circumstances Schmidt could easily get a 1st now look what happened.

People fail to understand that opportunity cost and cap space are also a form of compensation in trades. Because Nate Schmidt was traded for "only a third round pick", Vegas was able to sign Alex Pietrangelo. Undoubtedly, Vegas will be icing a more talented team next season.
In a trade market that isn't determined by other incentives, this trade would favor Vancouver, but incentives matter and scarcity drives this trade market.
Benning saved himself from getting an F this offseason. With Schmidt replacing the loss of Tanev and Holtby replacing Markstrom the F becomes a D. Barely passes but thats better than failing.
Benning sucks. Could have had Tanev (whose only 1 year older) for 1.5mil less and keep that 3rd! Bad asset management by Benning, meanwhile he lets another team off the hook and out of cap hell....and gives up a decent draft pick to do so? while his own team remains in caphell??? one of Bennings bad contracts shouldve gone the other way (and there is plenty to choose from).
