This trade is not great for one team
but brutal for the other. You know who’s who.
Arizona continues to hoard trash and picks.
And all I can is Benning has both improved the Canucks while also financially crippling them. Therefore he has also.. not improved the Canucks… so sounds about right for Jimbo..
Arizona takes on $12 million in cap for 1 year. They also save $42 million in cap over 6 years. After Garland signs, this year’s cap hits should probably balance out.
Short-term I like this deal for the Canucks. The problem is, it’s bad long-term, this really hurts their cup chances at any point in the future. This is a loss for the Canucks, because they aren’t a contender this season. This is almost certainly a move made because Jim Benning is trying to keep his job. Either that or he’s just incompetent.
This is an absolute win for the Yotes. OEL is good just to get off the books, no matter the return. The cap dumps are just one year, so they’re clearing a bunch of cap space in subsequent years. And Garland for 9th overall & a 2nd is a win for Arizona.
this deal looks absolutely nuts on the surface but it might actually be the most balanced one we've seen this offseason. OEL's contract is very close (if it isn't already) to being in negative value territory, so AZ is taking on similar money with the cap dumps but with less term. On Vancouver's side, you're getting a young top 6 forward in Garland, and the hope the OEL can find some of his old game, and giving up the 9th pick is reasonable for that package. Solid deal for both sides
Side note: When was the last time the NHL offseason was this exciting?

All these bad contracts end soon. Number 9 could be a big deal. Losing garland sucks but benning is stuck with OEL for many years. Arguably the worst contract in the league off of Arizona’s books. Big win by Armstrong.
As a diehard Canucks fan, I voted Arizona. Sure this helps the Canucks become a playoff team next year, but with taking on 6 years of OEL at $7M AAV it also closes their ability to improve their roster externally to become a Cup contender as there won't be any cap room.
This was a deal to save JB's job, and squander the future years of progress.
I was originally going to vote "Fair Deal", but saw that the Canucks also added a 2nd and a 7th.
Arizona wins this you get OEL's contract for the next 6 years off your books which yes hindsight you will pay around 5-6 Million in total over the next 6 years, but you also see the 12 Million they are taking right now it's only for this year. Arizona is looking long-term for an amazing future. It's not bad for them at all plus they have a Top 10 Pick in the draft now after forfeiting theres.
OEL has been so bad that getting rid of his contract is worth Garland alone. Getting pick 9 to take on all those one year cap dumps plus the other two picks for the small retention is a massive W for the Coyotes.
Benning is so bad. I swear all of Canada's GM's sole purpose in life is to ensure that Canada never sees a Stanley Cup. All of these GM's (barring Bergevin) know what they are doing
